Malaysia Later Life Malaysia

A plain introduction to retiring in Malaysia on a modest income.

Staying legally, without a brochure

A notebook and envelope on a desk by a window.
A quiet civic street of white buildings and lawns.

Wanting to live in Malaysia and being allowed to live in Malaysia are separate projects. The second one has forms, money, and a government that has changed its mind before.

The program people mean

Malaysia My Second Home, usually called MM2H, is the long-stay pass people refer to when they say "retirement visa." It is not citizenship, and it is not a casual stamp at the airport. It asks you to show savings, income, or both, and the amounts have been raised and split into tiers more than once. Sarawak has offered its own version, with its own figures, aimed at people who will actually spend time in that state. A blog post that prints a deposit amount as if it were permanent is doing you a disservice.

Read the current rules from the Immigration Department of Malaysia, and if you are looking at Sarawak or Sabah, read that state's conditions too. If a agent quotes a number, ask which circular it comes from and what month it was issued.

What a pass does not do

A long-stay pass does not, by itself, decide where you pay tax. Pensions, Social Security, a house you still own, and a company you did not close can remain tied to another country. That is a question for someone qualified in both tax systems, not for a landlord and not for this site.

The pass also does not buy belonging. You will still be a guest with a renewable permission. Plan for the year it is not renewed, even if you hope that year never comes.

A month is not a loophole

Many people begin with a shorter stay, look at apartments, and learn the heat. That is the right experiment. It is not a strategy for the decade after the experiment. Overstaying, or stitching together visits in a way the rules do not allow, is a bad way to start a life. If the financial test for a long-stay pass is more than you can lock up, Malaysia may still be a good place to visit for the winter. It may not be the place to move the furniture.

The useful order is: choose a city, price a real month, talk to immigration or a licensed adviser about the pass that fits your age and savings, and only then give notice on the house at home.
