Malaysia Later Life Malaysia

A plain introduction to retiring in Malaysia on a modest income.

Michelle Yeoh, and the Ipoh she came from

Michelle Yeoh is the Malaysian name Americans are likeliest to know. She was born Yeoh Choo Kheng in Ipoh in 1962, trained as a dancer until an injury closed that door, and was Miss Malaysia World in 1983. Hong Kong action films made her a star. Tomorrow Never Dies put her in a Bond movie. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Crazy Rich Asians carried her into American living rooms. In 2023 Everything Everywhere All at Once won her the Academy Award for best actress, the first Asian woman to take that prize. In the speeches she called herself Malaysian.

Ipoh did not turn itself into a museum of her. It is still the quieter city this blog keeps recommending for a modest month: limestone hills, white shophouses, coffee shops with marble tops, a pace that does not need a new mall every weekend. People look for a childhood house and find a town. The town is the better find.

You will not meet her by sitting where she might have eaten. You might understand the poise, though. Ipoh raises people who can leave and still sound like the place: exact, unhurried, not impressed by noise. Have the white coffee. Look at the hills. The famous daughter is in the wider world. The pretty, livable city stayed home.
