Malaysia Later Life Malaysia

A plain introduction to retiring in Malaysia on a modest income.

Houses standing in the water

Wooden houses on stilts over the water in George Town.
A narrow boardwalk between jetty houses.

Off the Weld Quay side of George Town, clan jetties run out over the channel on stilts. Lim, Tan, Chew, and the others: wooden houses, a boardwalk wide enough for two people and a bicycle, potted plants, laundry. They were piers for Chinese clan groups who worked the port. They read now as a photograph. They are still addresses.

Walk softly. A shrine and a front door can be three steps apart. Some jetties welcome visitors and sell drinks. Some are tired of being a backdrop. The pretty life here is a real household that happens to have water under the floorboards.

For a retiree the lesson is about what "character" costs. These houses flood, creak, and depend on a community that has been here for generations. You do not move onto a jetty because a travel page liked the picture. You visit, you buy something if it is offered, and you leave the lane clear. The view back toward the shophouses at the end of the pier is one of the best in the city, and it is free if you are polite.
