Malaysia Later Life Malaysia

A plain introduction to retiring in Malaysia on a modest income.

Henry Golding, Sarawak on an American poster

A misty river and rainforest bank in Sarawak.
A timber longhouse beside a Sarawak river.

Henry Golding became a familiar face in America in 2018, when Crazy Rich Asians cast him as the romantic lead. The film is set among Singapore\'s very rich. Golding was born in Sarawak in 1987, to an English father and an Iban mother, and grew up between Malaysia and England. He worked as a television presenter in Asia and Britain before Hollywood called. Later films kept him on American marquees. The person is Malaysian and British. The fame, for most US viewers, is the movie.

Sarawak is not Singapore, and it is not the apartment in the poster. It is a huge state on Borneo: a river capital at Kuching, longhouses upcountry, rain, and a long-stay conversation that is not the same as the one in Kuala Lumpur. Iban life is a people and a set of rules, not a costume for a lead actor. Visit as a guest if you are invited onto a longhouse veranda. Do not treat a community as a set.

The cheerful lesson is narrower. A man born on this river ended up carrying a Hollywood romance, and Americans who had never said the word Sarawak suddenly had. If the film is why you look the place up, good. Then read the state, not the poster. The buildings that matter here are timber and water and a city promenade, and they do not need a credits sequence.
